Our First Sunday Service
Getting together for dinner and activism
by Carl BettisLast night my wife and I had our first Sunday Service (my wife's idea). About 10 friends, neighbors, and neighbors of friends came to our house for (1) activism, and (2) a potluck dinner. The guest list was limited to the first 10 to sign up, and if you wanted to come, you had to commit to both working and staying for dinner.
By accident, the potluck dinner turned out to be vegetarian. (Not vegan. There was a considerable amount of cheese.)
What kinds of activism? A bunch of small things, for which we provided materials, resources, and information. This is only a partial list, but actions included:
- Look up your elected representatives and put their numbers in your phone.
- Cut up 1/4 sheet informational flyers and cards for distribution.
- Submit testimony online for pending legislation in the Missouri House.
- Contact streaming TV services to either thank them for providing Black History Month programming, or ask why they aren't.
We had fun working together, and more fun visiting over dinner. I felt nourished spiritually as well as physically, and rejuvenated.
All in all a successful experiment. We plan on doing this once a month. Our backyard neighbors said they plan to host their own Sunday Service dinners!
